Australian Chocolate Slice – If you’ve ever spent time in Australia, there’s a good chance you’ve seen a chocolate slice just like this one. The Chocolate Slice is a classic there, often found at school lunches, bakery, and home kitchens. It’s the kind of simple bar dessert that generations have grown up with. The base is rich and chocolatey with just a hint of coconut, and it comes together quickly with pantry staples you probably already have on hand.
BARS
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup unsweetened desiccated coconut
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 2 1/2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 large egg
- 2/3 cup butter, melted and cooled
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
ICING
- 1 1/3 cup powdered sugar
- 2 1/2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- 3 tablespoons butter, melted
- 1 1/2 tablespoon boiling water
How to Make Australian Chocolate Slice
- Preheat oven to 325 degrees F and line a 9×9-inch baking dish with parchment paper, then lightly grease paper.
- For the crust: In a medium-sized bowl, combine flour, coconut, brown sugar, and cocoa powder. Mix in egg, melted butter, and vanilla until just combined.
- Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish and press into an even layer.
- Bake for 20-23 minutes or until baked through the middle.
- When bars are about 5 minutes from fully baked, prepare the icing: In a medium-sized bowl, sift together the powdered sugar and cocoa powder. Mix in the melted butter and water until smooth.
- Pour icing over bars while they’re still hot out of the oven and quickly spread to the edges to evenly cover.
- Allow bars to fully cool and icing to set at room temperature before slicing.
