Virginia’s Molasses Cookies – My grandmother, Virginia, was a culinary instructor until her passing at over 100 years. This recipe was one of her signatures and remains a family favorite four generations later. Hope they become one of your family’s favorites, too!
Ingredients
- 3/4 c shortening, I use 1 stick margarine and 1/2 stick butter
- 1 c sugar
- 1/4 c heaping, molasses
- 1 lg egg
- 2 tsp baking soda
- 2 1/4 c all-purpose flour
- 3/4 tsp ground cloves
- 1/2 tsp ground ginger
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp salt
How to Make Virginia’s Molasses Cookies
- Cream together the shortening and sugar.
- Add the molasses and blend well.
- Add the egg and beat until the mixture is smooth.
- Sift together the flour, baking soda, salt, and spices.
- Mix the dry ingredients with the wet ingredients.
- Form the dough into 1-inch balls.
- Roll the balls in sugar.
- Flatten the balls slightly with the bottom of a juice glass dipped in sugar and place them 2 inches apart on a well-greased cookie sheet.
- Bake at 350 degrees for 8-10 minutes.
- Remove the cookies from the cookie sheet immediately and let them cool on toweling or wire racks.
