These Slow Cooker Onion Burger Steaks are tender beef patties simmered in a rich, savory onion gravy. They are easy, comforting, and perfect for serving over mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles.
1tablespoonchopped fresh parsleyoptional, for garnish
Instructions
Add the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, garlic powder, onion powder, Worcestershire sauce, kosher salt, and black pepper to a large mixing bowl.
Gently mix everything together until the ingredients are evenly combined, being careful not to overwork the meat.
Divide the beef mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each portion into an oval patty about ¾ inch thick.
Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
Add the burger steaks to the hot skillet and sear them for 2 to 3 minutes on each side, just until browned. They do not need to be cooked through.
Arrange the sliced onions evenly across the bottom of the slow cooker.
Place the browned burger steaks on top of the onions.
In a small bowl, whisk together the beef broth and onion soup mix until well combined.
Pour the broth mixture evenly over the burger steaks.
Cover and cook on LOW for 6 to 7 hours or on HIGH for 3 to 4 hours, until the burger steaks are tender and fully cooked.
About 20 minutes before serving, whisk the cornstarch and cold water together in a small bowl until smooth.
Stir the cornstarch slurry into the cooking liquid in the slow cooker.
Cover again and cook on HIGH for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the onion gravy has thickened.
Spoon the hot onion gravy over the burger steaks before serving.
Garnish with chopped fresh parsley, if desired.
Notes
For the best flavor, do not skip browning the burger steaks before adding them to the slow cooker. That quick sear gives the gravy a deeper, richer taste.
